Experience the power and beauty of Manitoba’s inland ocean, Lake Winnipeg, from our sustainable, eco-friendly straw-bale, post & beam cottage home.

The Last Straw is our dream cottage, a sustainable, eco-friendly straw-bale, post & beam structure on the shore of Lake Winnipeg. Our lake house is located approximately 60 km. north of Riverton on Highway 234 in the Little Deer Cottage Subdivision.
The Last Straw has foot and a half thick bale walls with window seats, high ceilings with fans, textured curved stucco walls painted with eco-friendly silicate dispersion paint, rustic beams from local timber and polished pine floors. The insulating factor of straw, double that of regular construction, keeps our home toasty warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There is no need for air conditioning. We have a sunny, open concept kitchen, dining and living room heated with a Jotul woodstove. We offer one bedroom with queen size bed and patio doors to a private screened gazebo. This bedroom has a juxtaposed private bathroom.
In summer, lounge in the screened gazebo, relax in the hammock on our sandy beach or enjoy toasting bannock over an evening campfire. Head north to hop on the ferry (free) to Matheson Island, a unique fishing community. Enjoy pelican and eagle watching in season and in winter enjoy the vastness of the frozen lake and the postcard perfect evergreen forest.
Your hostess, Sharon, loves cooking and will get your day off to a great start with a full breakfast served in the dining area or in the screened gazebo. A complimentary home-baked evening snack with coffee or tea is offered. Dinner is available to guests at an additional charge. House specialties include vegetarian soups, vegan meals, local Lake Winnipeg Pickerel and dessert pies.
Our family includes our Border Collie, Willow, who will be thrilled to meet you.

We are happy hosts of a “Little Free Library” which guests can enjoy. The Little Free Library is an international network of small outdoor libraries, where neighbours are encouraged to read and build community.
We support encourage sustainable tourism and reducing the environmental impact of The Last Straw Bed and Breakfast. We encourage our guests to consider the importance of improving and maintaining the environment for future generations and we welcome any suggestions.
Open year round.

Reviews for The Last Straw B&B:

Five Star

The Last Straw B&B exceeded all of my expectations. Genuine hospitality, cozy accommodations and distinctive gourmet home cooking, served up in a unique straw-bale house on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, all made for a second-to-none experience. The view in this remote setting is spectacular! I highly recommend this B&B to anyone who wants a getaway.

Looking for a mini vacay for just me. Can you send me your vacancy dates? Are all the quaint shops in Gimli now open?

    Thank you

I spent 3 glorious days in late May rejunivinating. The meals were fantastic, flavorful and filled with nutrients that would feul my body. A fire by my side outside or inside at most times and the glorious smell of the water, flowers and freshly brewed mint tea. Sharon & Bill are the best of hosts, so much fun and interesting conversation.:)

We spent two wonderful nights taking a Retreat from the world for our anniversary at The Last Straw. It was Glorious! Bill and Sharon are wonderful, welcoming hosts and we felt warmly accepted into their beautiful home. The meals were amazingly delicious, and our room was comfortable and immaculately clean. The straw bale house is an incredible construction and made it a unique and beautiful place to stay. The sun porch was private and a restful place to enjoy coffee and read. The yard was incredibly beautiful with woods and flowers and an inviting area to sit by the fire. Situated right on the lake, we spent time down on their beach soaking in the peaceful sound of the waves while watching Pelicans roost together on a nearby rock. It was a perfect get-away. To top it all off, we got to enjoy some of Bill’s poetry, his book outlining his journey as one who overcomes, and Sharon’s beautiful, vibrant artwork. This was the perfect place for us to be on our anniversary. Thank you Sharon and Bill!!

I just spent a beautiful and refreshing long weekend at The Last Straw on a personal retreat. This place is a feast for the senses – the smells of the fresh air, the woods, the visual beauty of the lake, the cozy, artful straw bale house, the sounds of seagulls, waves, the savouring of coffee and delicious food, the gentle breeze, the inviting spaces for relaxing both body and soul. Sharon and Bill are perceptive and generous hosts. I was moved and delighted by their hospitality and our conversations together.
