Nominated for Travel Manitoba’s Sustainable Tourism Award, Fairmount is a 1914 farmhouse sitting on a prairie waterway in one of the most beautiful parts of Manitoba.

Sheltered by a natural spruce grove, Fairmount Bed and Breakfast is located beside a prairie waterway. During breakfast, you can watch both woodland and waterbirds. Spend the day relaxing on the backyard deck, while sheep and cattle graze on the pastures. At night from your bedroom see the moon rise, reflected on the water, as you fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and night birds. This 1914 two and a half storey bed and breakfast is typical of many farmhouses built at the turn of the last century. The home features a screened sunroom, stained glass windows, lightning rods, metal ceiling tiles, maple flooring, and furnishings in the style of early Canadiana. For some a trip to the farm is like a journey back in time. At Fairmount Bed and Breakfast you will sleep between sun-dried sheets. The beds have wool comforters and goose feather pillows made here at the farm. Childhood memories are rekindled by the swings in the yard. The garden full of vegetables, fruits, and flowers is just like Grandma’s. Fairmount Bed and Breakfast provides a taste of the past, because just like Granny most of the foods served are made ‘from scratch’, with locally produced farm products. You might even want to help gather the eggs for breakfast, or help make some jams and jellies. Meals featuring our own lamb, can be provided at extra cost. During your stay you can walk down Fairmount Road, to the site of the historic Carlton Trail, or take our wetland walkway foot path across the dam. Fairmount Bed and Breakfast is situated close to Riding Mountain National Park, where you can hike or ski. At the end of the day come back to relax around a bonfire, or have tea in the cool screened veranda. Your hostess, Susan Proven, is a Home Economist who loves to cook. Since moving from the city to the farm, she has learned how to grow and prepare many of the foods served at Fairmount Bed and Breakfast. Interested in agriculture and rural lifestyles, she has a small flock of sheep. Favourite activities are rowing, cross country skiing, and visiting with interesting people.

In the winter the ski trail is groomed almost every day to provide a 3 mile tour of the bush and wetland on the farm. The winter ski package at Fairmount includes a couple of night’s accommodation, while you enjoy skiing at either Russel’s Assessipi, Minnedosa’s Ski Valley, or Riding Mountain cross country ski trails. Included is a dinner for two featuring lamb produced at Fairmount Bed and Breakfast.

Fairmount also offers Culinary Tourism experiences which include food preservation, bread and pastry baking skills. Participants will harvest the produce from the farm’s garden, and work as a group (maximum 6) to prepare an evening meal to be enjoyed in the heritage home’s dining room. Call for more information.
